DENSO Robotics Releases New Robots for Use in Sterile Work Environments

Models of the new VS-Series meet clean room ISO Class 5 / robots increase productivity, particularly in the pharmaceutical and electronics industries

The pharmaceutical, medical, and high-tech industry, have the highest hygiene standards seen on the market today. For the safety of both the consumer and patient, or for the manufacturing of sensitive products like microchips and solar modules, the entire production process must be absolutely free from bacteria and other harmful substances. DENSO Robotics, worldwide leader in small robotics, responds to these needs with robots that are specifically designed with these particular variables in mind. All four of DENSO’s recently launched VS models (050, 060, 068 and 087), meet the clean-room class ISO 5 standards, and are suitable for all environments that require high levels of sterilisation. DENSO’s next group of robots scheduled for market release will meet the even more stringent ISO 3 standards.

In the future, the demand for pharmaceutical products will continue to increase worldwide – particularly in emerging countries. Consumers are demanding less expensive medication, and more affordable products. Robots are an efficient way to reduce medical production costs while continually increasing quality. The use of industrial robots also guarantees minimal risk of human error in areas of high volume production such as medicinal drugs.

For these particular industries and environments, high speed and high performance robots are becoming increasing necessary. Steffen Wissel of European Sales for DENSO Robotics Europe explains, "Our 6-axis VS-Series’ robots are available with up to 11,000 mm/s, and are the fastest and most compact in their class. With the launch of our new models that meet the protection class ISO 5, we are responding to growing demands from pharmaceutical and medical industries; our robots are perfectly suited for sterile manufacturing facilities.”

The newest DENSO robot models are equipped with sealed joints to protect them from corrosion; additionally, the VS series allows connecting all cables from the bottom of the robot.

In instances where hygiene is vital and counter-top space is limited, this function is a great advantage.

The new VS-Series robots are very precise (repeatability of ± 0.02mm and ± 0.03mm), and can reach a cycle time of up to 0.33 seconds (cycle time with one kilograms load: time measuring how long it takes the robot to travel 25 mm x 300 mm x 25 mm and return). The maximum load for the robots is up to seven kilograms, and having brakes on all axes allow the robot to be assembled on the floor, ceiling and/or wall. In 2011, the robots were awarded the iF Product Design Award. The new VS-series robots are the first worldwide with a fully integrated wiring (optional) up to the sixth axis, allowing the connection of Ethernet-supported devices such as cameras. In addition to this, thanks to its 17 signals it is possible to connect camera lights and/or servo grippers, for instance.
